Alabama WIC

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) originated from a series of events and studies in the 1960s that highlighted malnutrition as a national problem in the U.S.

You must meet certain Income Guidelines, however this program can help bridge the gap for children under the age of five, breatfeeding parents, and pregnant women. Below are some meals that my family has enjoyed when purchasing groceries with eWIC. You should call or visit your local health department to apply.

If you are ever confused about what items may or may not be WIC approved you can use the app. The WIC app allows you to view the brochure and even scan food items while shopping to determine eligibility.

Avocado Toast & Eggs

1 Hass Avocado

2 pieces of wheat bread (toasted)

2 Eggs made to your liking

Capers (optional/ not WIC approved)

Depending on my mood, I either sliced or mash the avocado. I then season the avocado with minced garlic, and red pepper flakes. I place the avocado a top two pieces of toasted wheat bread. I like my eggs sunny side up with paprika sprinkled on top.

Yogurt & Cereal

1 1/2 cups of yogurt

1/4 cup Great Grains-Crunchy Pecan Cereal

Fresh berries or other fruit (optional)

Extra pecans or almonds (optional) *not WIC approved

Chili w/ Grilled Cheese Bites

Chili Ingredients

3 Cans of Red Kidney Beans

1 Chopped white onion (fresh or frozen)

32 oz. Unsalted beef broth (not WIC approved)

2-3Pks Chili Seasoning (not WIC approved)

1lb ground chicken or beef (optional/ not WIC approved)

Grilled Cheese Ingredients

2 pieces wheat bread

12slices sharp cheddar cheese

Optional Toppings

Chopped green onion

Shredded cheese

Sour cream (not WIC approved)

I typically dump all the chili ingredients into the crockpot and let it cook for about 6 hours on low. I cook the ground chicken or beef and add it into the crockpot at about hour 3. I usually make my grilled cheese on the stove top by toasting both sides of each piece of bread with butter and placing two pieces of cheese between the two slices of bread. I use a spatula and smush my grilled cheese flat. I then cut my grilled cheese into 9 bite sized pieces. I scatter the grilled cheese bites on top of the chili.
